Will Jason Momoa Return as Duncan Idaho for Dune: Messiah?

Jason Momoa just let it slip-he’s coming back as Duncan Idaho in Dune: Messiah. Despite the character’s dramatic end in the first Dune film, Momoa confirmed he’ll be returning for Denis Villeneuve’s next installment, which adapts Frank Herbert’s second book in the Dune series.

When asked by Entertainment Weekly about his involvement, the actor didn’t hold back: “Well, I’m not sure if I’m going to get in trouble or not. But it’s the same thing like Game of Thrones, you know what I mean? If you didn’t read the books, it’s not my fault, right? I’m making a comeback. You got me in trouble!”

In Dune: Messiah, Duncan is brought back as a ghola-a clone made from his original cells-and becomes a key player in the political and philosophical drama that unfolds as Paul Atreides’ empire starts to crumble. That means Momoa’s character will be more important than ever, and likely even more complex.

Villeneuve’s third film is expected to dive deep into Paul’s reign as Emperor and the chaos that erupts from the religious following he’s built. The movie will bring back Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Florence Pugh, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, and Javier Bardem, continuing the saga with a cast that’s already nailed their roles.

As for the score? Hans Zimmer hasn’t started it yet. He told Collider that while he wrote the entire Dune: Part Two soundtrack before filming even began, he’s holding off on Messiah until he can give it his full attention.

Filming is set to begin in June 2025-an earlier-than-expected start, especially considering Villeneuve had planned to step away before tackling Messiah. But he says the inspiration hit hard after wrapping Part Two.

“When I saw Part Two finished, finally, I realised that that was it. I’d done it. I’d done an adaptation of Dune… But the images that kept coming back to my mind, the appetite is absolutely intact. That’s the biggest surprise. I still want to go back to Arrakis.”

So now it’s official: Duncan Idaho is coming back. The sand, the spice, the chaos-it’s all picking up again in Dune: Messiah, hitting theaters December 2026.
