Sarah Jessica Parker has been married to Matthew Broderick for nearly three decades, and according to her, keeping things low-key might be the real secret sauce to marriage.
In a recent interview with HELLO! magazine, the ‘Sex and the City’ star opened up about what’s made their marriage work all these years.
“Probably that I don’t talk about it! It really is a secret,” she joked. But then she got real: “Maybe it’s because we’re not a Hollywood couple. We live in New York – maybe that’s good.”
Parker, 60, and Broderick share three kids – James, 22, and 15-year-old twins Marion and Tabitha. Unlike many celebrity couples who live under the constant buzz of LA’s paparazzi scene, these two have kept their relationship largely private, opting for a quieter life in New York.
While Parker may be known globally for her fashion-forward character Carrie Bradshaw, the actress herself isn’t too caught up in the glam. In fact, she revealed she’s long dealt with insecurities about her appearance.
“I’ve always been insecure about my looks, so nothing has changed. But I’m happy. I don’t mind,” she said. “Every day when I leave the house, I have to think twice about how I look. I know I’m going to run into someone with a camera and have to worry about whether I want to wear my favorite baggy pants or what my hair looks like.”
Despite being considered a style icon, Parker doesn’t really buy into the label. “It’s flattering, but it’s something I don’t really think about,” she shared. “I do love clothes and fashion, but I don’t go out to be anything other than myself.”
Her personal style mantra? Comfort over flash. At home, she’s often in jeans, corduroys, or even a nightgown, and she doesn’t care much if things get messy. “Nothing very fancy. Nothing that I care much about, because it’s bound to get dirty,” she said.
Even with fame and an iconic TV role under her belt, Parker insists she’s not about changing to fit expectations. “There’s a time when you’re young when you think a lot about people’s opinions of you, but I’d be at a disadvantage to spend a lot of time thinking about what other people think of me now, good or bad.”
By staying true to herself and living outside the Hollywood bubble, Sarah Jessica Parker seems to have found the balance so many in the spotlight struggle to achieve in marriages – and that might just be the biggest secret of all.
