Cristiano Ronaldo has paid a heartfelt tribute to Aurelio Pereira, the esteemed scout credited with discovering him, who passed away on April 8, 2025, at the age of 77.
Pereira, a pivotal figure at Sporting Lisbon, was instrumental in nurturing talents like Ronaldo and Luis Figo, significantly shaping Portuguese football.
“One of the greatest symbols of world training has left us, but his legacy will live on forever,” Ronaldo wrote. “I will never stop being grateful for everything he did for me and for so many other players. Until forever, Mr. Aurelio, thank you for everything. Rest in peace.”
Aurelio Pereira wasn’t just a coach – he was the backbone of Portugal’s football development. He founded Sporting Lisbon’s recruitment and training department in 1988 and went on to shape the careers of some of Portugal’s most iconic players: Ronaldo, Luis Figo, Nani, Ricardo Quaresma, and more. His influence reached far beyond one generation.
Sporting Lisbon honored Pereira by naming their main academy pitch after him in 2012, recognizing his immense contributions to the club. In 2017, he was awarded the Medal of Sporting Merit by the City of Lisbon, and in 2018, UEFA distinguished him with the Order of Merit for his services to football.
The Portuguese Football Federation acknowledged his passing as an “irreparable loss” to national football, highlighting his kindness and dedication to nurturing talent.
Pereira’s legacy is evident in the success of the players he mentored and the lasting impact he had on Portuguese football. His dedication to discovering and developing talent has left an indelible mark on the sport.
