“Police Academy” star Steve Guttenberg has officially filed for divorce from his wife, Emily Smith. The 66-year-old actor submitted the paperwork in the Superior Court of California, County of Los Angeles, on April 4, 2025, citing “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for the split.
According to the documents, Guttenberg has agreed to pay spousal support, and both parties will be covering their own legal fees. The former couple had a prenuptial agreement in place, which outlines how separate property and financial responsibilities will be divided.
Steve Guttenberg and Smith tied the knot in a private ceremony in Malibu in January 2019, after meeting on a blind date in 2014. Their engagement became public in 2016 when Emily posted a photo of the proposal on Facebook, captioned simply: “Yes, yes, yes.”
Back in 2017, Guttenberg spoke glowingly about his now-estranged wife. In an interview with The Daily Beast, he described her as “the real deal,” adding, “She makes me a better person… Her value system is terrific, and her character, integrity, and sense of humor make her a really nice lady.”
This will be Guttenberg’s second divorce. He was previously married to actress Denise Bixler from 1988 to 1992.
The actor, best known for his comedic roles in the “Police Academy” series, “Three Men and a Baby,” and “Short Circuit,” has largely kept his private life out of the spotlight in recent years. However, he made headlines earlier this year when his home in Pacific Palisades was nearly threatened by the Los Angeles wildfires. Guttenberg told People that he “chose to stand and fight,” adding, “At this time I have the choice of sitting down and walking or standing up and doing what I can. I choose to stand and fight.”
While the divorce is unfortunate, those close to the couple say the split appears amicable. No further details about the settlement or future plans have been disclosed.
