Ben Affleck is finally breaking his silence on his highly publicized split from Jennifer Lopez, and he’s setting the record straight: there was no big scandal, no secret drama, and no explosive fallout.
In a new interview with GQ for their April 2025 issue, the Oscar winner got candid about the end of his marriage to Lopez. According to Affleck, the truth is way more boring than the public might think. “There’s a tendency to look at breakups and want to identify root causes,” he said. “But honestly, the truth is much more quotidian than probably people would believe or would be interesting.”
Affleck, 52, made it clear that their divorce had nothing to do with some dramatic clash or behind-the-scenes betrayal. Instead, it was about two people figuring out life in real time. He explained that while he and Lopez had different views on fame and privacy-she embraces the spotlight, he avoids it-that wasn’t the root of their split. “You don’t marry a ship captain and then say, ‘Well, I don’t like going out in the water,'” he said, referencing Lopez’s high-profile lifestyle.
He also talked about being part of Lopez’s 2024 documentary, “The Greatest Love Story Never Told,” saying that it was his idea and that he only agreed to appear because he wanted to do it honestly. “If I’m going to participate in this, I want to try to do it in an honest way… I want people to see that [Lopez] is great.”
Despite the end of their marriage, Affleck had nothing but kind words for Lopez. “She handled celebrity more adeptly and more adroitly than I have,” he said, praising her ability to navigate fame. “I love and support this person. I believe in them. They’re great.”
Lopez, 55, previously spoke about the split in Interview magazine, saying she had no regrets. “That doesn’t mean it didn’t almost take me out for good,” she admitted. “But now, on the other side of it, I think to myself, ‘F—, that is exactly what I needed.'”
The couple, known as “Bennifer,” first got engaged in 2002 before calling it off in 2003. They reunited nearly two decades later and married in 2022, but Lopez filed for divorce in August 2024. It was finalized in January 2025.
Now, Affleck is moving forward and clearing the air. No drama. Just two very famous people trying to make it work-until it didn’t.
