Cate Blanchett is ready to leave the spotlight, and this time, she means it.
The Oscar-winning actress, 55, says she’s “serious” about walking away from acting to focus on the next chapter of her life. In a new interview with Radio Times, she made it clear she’s not just tossing out a dramatic soundbite. “My family roll their eyes every time I say it, but I mean it,” she said. “I am serious about giving up acting. There are a lot of things I want to do with my life.”
Blanchett has had one of the most celebrated careers in modern cinema, racking up two Academy Awards, multiple BAFTAs, and Golden Globes for roles in everything from Blue Jasmine to TÁR. But fame, she admits, has never felt like home. “I’ve spent a lifetime getting comfortable with the feeling of being uncomfortable,” she explained. “When you see soundbites of things you’ve said, pulled out and italicised, they sound really loud. I’m not that person.”
She describes herself as someone who always felt on the outside, never quite expecting to belong in the A-list world. “I go with curiosity into whatever environment I’m in, not expecting to be accepted or welcomed.”
Her decision to possibly bow out doesn’t stem from a burnout or scandal. It’s more of a thoughtful exit, something that’s been brewing for years. Cate has said before that her film career was something of a fluke. At the Rotterdam Film Festival earlier this year, she admitted she thought she’d be a lifelong theatre actor: “I was resigned, happily, to a career in theatre. I didn’t think I was that girl.”
Back in the early days of her career, Blanchett expected the same fate many actresses feared, the dreaded five-year shelf life. But she shattered that ceiling, and she’s watching the industry change around her in ways she never imagined. “The shelf life of actresses when I first came on the scene was about five years,” she told Business Insider. “The more diverse the industry is at base level, when things are developed, the more exciting it is for audiences.”
Blanchett, who shares four children with husband Andrew Upton, seems ready to focus on passions outside the film set. What’s next? That remains under wraps. But one thing’s certain, if she does walk away, she’s doing it on her own terms.
Whether she’s on stage, off-camera, or behind the scenes in something completely different, Cate Blanchett’s next act will likely be just as impactful as her last.
