Supergiant Games has officially announced that Hades II, its highly anticipated sequel to the 2020 indie sensation Hades, will debut as a timed console exclusive on the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. This marks a major win for Nintendo, securing early access to one of the most talked-about indie games in recent years.
Originally released in Early Access on PC in May 2024 via Steam and Epic Games Store, Hades II will now launch simultaneously on PC and both Nintendo Switch models. Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 versions will arrive later, although no firm release dates have been announced for those platforms.
The news was quietly confirmed in a new “Creator’s Voice” segment uploaded to Nintendo’s official YouTube channel. The final screen read: “Hades II, launching first for consoles on Nintendo Switch 2. More information coming later this year.”
Supergiant Games later clarified that the Switch and Switch 2 versions will arrive alongside the game’s Early Access PC release, aligning the rollout across both handheld and desktop platforms.
This is Supergiant’s first-ever sequel, and it’s already generating serious buzz. Studio director Amir Rao said the development team is using what they learned from the first Hades to push performance further with the help of the Switch 2’s upgraded hardware. Rao emphasized that maintaining a smooth 60 frames-per-second experience remains a top priority.
“With the extra power of Nintendo Switch 2, we know that we can push some of the graphical features,” Rao explained.
The sequel continues the mythology-driven rogue-like formula that made the original a hit, with deeper narrative elements and refined gameplay. Hades II features a new protagonist, Melinoë, the sister of Zagreus, who battles through the underworld to confront the god of time, Chronos.
This timed exclusivity also hints at Nintendo’s growing interest in locking in third-party content early. Similar to how Sony has historically approached exclusives, this move could help position the Switch 2 as a serious competitor in its early days on the market.
For now, fans can look forward to Hades II hitting both generations of Switch hardware at launch, while PlayStation and Xbox players will have to wait a little longer.
Stay tuned for updates on the exact release window and additional features as Supergiant Games continues development.
