The long-awaited Death Stranding live-action adaptation movie just took a massive leap forward.
According to Deadline, A Quiet Place: Day One director Michael Sarnoski has officially signed on to helm the Death Stranding movie for A24 and Kojima Productions. Sarnoski will not only direct but also write the film, making this one of the most intriguing game-to-film crossovers in years.
For those unfamiliar, Death Stranding (originally released in 2019) is a genre-bending game from visionary creator Hideo Kojima. It follows Sam Bridges (played in the game by Norman Reedus) as he traverses a fractured, post-apocalyptic America teeming with invisible threats, ghostly creatures, and existential dread. The game explores deep themes of isolation, connection, and survival – all through Kojima’s unique, mind-bending lens.
While plot specifics for the movie are still under wraps, the film is expected to lean into the eerie, atmospheric mystery that made the game a cult hit. Given Sarnoski’s work on Pig and his upcoming horror prequel A Quiet Place: Day One, fans can expect a similarly grounded, emotionally charged take on Death Stranding‘s high-concept world.
The timing of the movie news is no coincidence – Death Stranding 2: On the Beach is set to release on June 26, 2025 for PlayStation 5. The sequel will bring back Norman Reedus as Sam and Lea Seydoux as Fragile, with new characters voiced by Elle Fanning, Troy Baker, Shioli Kutsuna, Luca Marinelli, and more.
The synergy between the sequel and the film could create a Death Stranding cinematic universe of sorts – something Kojima has long hinted at in cryptic interviews. And with A24 on board, the film already has indie cred to spare.
There’s still no official release date for the movie, but development is clearly underway. For now, fans can gear up for Death Stranding 2, and keep their eyes peeled for casting announcements.
If you thought the game was wild, just wait until you see what Kojima and Sarnoski do with the big screen.
