Director Shawn Levy and actor Ryan Gosling have confirmed their exciting new Star Wars project, titled Star Wars: Starfighter, which is set for release on May 28, 2027.
The announcement was made during the Star Wars Celebration event in Tokyo, Japan on April 18, 2025, making waves among fans.
This standalone movie will take place five years after The Rise of Skywalker (2019), marking a fresh chapter in the Star Wars universe. Levy emphasized that this is a completely new adventure, not a prequel or sequel, as he clarified in his statement, “There are many rumors, some true, some not… This is not a prequel, this is not a sequel. It’s a new adventure.”
Gosling, who will star in the film, expressed his excitement by saying, “There is not a more perfect filmmaker for this particular story than Shawn.” The collaboration between Levy and Gosling comes after their successful teamwork in The Adam Project (2022), and fans are eager to see their creative synergy unfold in the Star Wars franchise.
The script, penned by Jonathan Tropper, took two years to craft, and production is set to begin in the autumn. Although the plot and character details are still under wraps, Levy has made it clear that the film won’t tie into any of the existing Star Wars movies or TV shows. He shared his approach in a podcast, explaining, “I don’t want to do a Star Wars movie that is redundant to others.”
In addition, there were reports that actress Mikey Madison, known for her Oscar-winning performance in Anora, was offered a role but declined it. Levy and the team have been working with Lucasfilm since 2022 to bring this project to life.
Levy’s vision for Star Wars: Starfighter is centered around tone and characters. He wants to create a story that feels organic, while also capturing the essence of the Force and the larger themes of personal power and destiny. “That’s Star Wars to me,” he said, combining visual delight with powerful themes of empowerment.
With anticipation building, fans can look forward to an all-new adventure in the Star Wars universe, coming in 2027.
