Johnny Depp is back on set, and this time, it’s not for a courtroom drama.
The 60-year-old actor has officially started filming ‘Day Drinker’, his first major Hollywood project since his explosive legal battles with ex-wife Amber Heard. The Lionsgate thriller marks Depp’s return to the big screen, and yes, it’s stacked with A-listers and new-gen talent alike.
Depp reunites with director Marc Webb (500 Days of Summer, The Amazing Spider-Man) and longtime collaborator Penélope Cruz for the high-stakes psychological thriller, now filming in Spain.
Marc teased the vibe of the shoot in a statement: “We’re in a beautiful location with a fantastic crew and a thrilling, ferocious story to tell. This is gonna be fun.”
Cruz, 50, has previously worked with Depp on three films, Blow, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and Murder on the Orient Express. The chemistry? Proven.
Also joining the cast is Madelyn Cline (Outer Banks), who plays a private-yacht bartender that gets entangled with Depp’s mysterious onboard guest. What starts as an intriguing connection spirals into a dangerous game, anchored by a criminal figure portrayed by Cruz.
The supporting cast is full of names worth watching:
- Manu Ríos (Elite)
- Arón Piper (The Mess You Leave Behind)
- Juan Diego Botto (The Suicide Squad)
- Anika Boyle, a promising newcomer
The film is written by Zach Dean, the pen behind The Tomorrow War, Free Guy, and Prisoners, with production handled by heavyweights including Thunder Road’s Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee (yes, the John Wick people).
Production is backed by Lionsgate and 30WEST, with Webb also serving as executive producer. Industry titans like Dan Friedkin, Micah Green, and Stephen Deuters round out the production team, while Javier Aguirresarobe (DP), Jan Roelfs (production design), and Penny Rose (costumes) ensure it all looks top-tier.
Day Drinker isn’t just another thriller. It’s Johnny Depp’s first true return to Hollywood spotlight following years of personal and legal turbulence that culminated in a trial seen by millions around the world. His previous post-trial project, Jeanne du Barry, was French-produced and Cannes-ready, but this? This is big-league, U.S.-backed, global cinema.
With high-end backing, buzzy co-stars, and a sleek thriller premise, this film is poised to reignite Depp’s stateside career, and the industry is watching.
Lionsgate is expected to roll out an aggressive release strategy for Day Drinker, hoping to ride the comeback wave and put Depp back in Oscar-level conversation.
So buckle up. The comeback has officially begun, and this yacht thriller might just be the most talked-about ride of 2025.
