It’s official, Sony has done the unthinkable. Just when you thought the PS5 Digital Edition might finally get more affordable, boom, a price hike. Not a small one, either.
Starting April 14, 2025, the PS5 Digital Edition will cost £429.99 in the UK, up from £389.99, a 10% increase. Similar spikes are rolling out in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand, all while Sony celebrates its latest profits.
But here’s the kicker: this move isn’t about adding features or bundling in extras. It’s just… more expensive. And fans aren’t having it.
According to the company, the price jump is due to the “challenging economic environment”, you know, inflation, shaky exchange rates, and all that. Never mind the fact that Sony just posted a solid profit boost in its gaming division.
Meanwhile, the standard PS5 and the PS5 Pro? Untouched. They’re staying at their current prices. Even more bizarrely, the PS5 disc drive accessory is actually getting cheaper. No, we don’t get it either.
This isn’t how console life cycles usually work. Gamers are used to prices going down as the tech gets older, not up.
“Is Sony allergic to affordability now?” asked one user on Reddit. “This is the exact opposite of what we were expecting.”
Others pointed out how odd it is to raise prices now, especially with Project Q, Xbox’s rumored next-gen system, and Nintendo’s Switch successor heating up the competition. It’s a bold move, but possibly a reckless one.
Gaming forums, TikTok clips, and Twitter/X feeds are on fire with complaints. The general mood? Confusion, betrayal, and frustration.
“Just say you want us to buy second-hand,” one user tweeted.
Another added, “It’s 2025 and gaming has never felt less accessible.”
For families already tightening budgets and Gen Z gamers entering the workforce in a post-pandemic economy, this move feels like a slap in the face.
Unless you’re in the U.S. or Japan (where prices remain the same, for now), you’re either going to pay more for a new PS5 Digital Edition or start scouring the resale market. And let’s not even talk about scalpers.
For now, Sony has remained silent beyond their canned inflation excuse. But one thing is clear: gamers are not buying this PR spin.
If Sony thought it could quietly slip in a PS5 price hike without stirring the pot, well, welcome to the internet in 2025.
