Nick Jonas on Broadway isn’t as effortless as it might seem. He’s performed all over the world with the Jonas Brothers, but even with that experience, Nick says doing The Last Five Years live in front of a Broadway crowd makes him nervous.
At the show’s opening night at Hudson Theatre in NYC, he shared that he actually feels the most pressure from fans who already know and love the musical. “It’s those people who’ve done this in their school or college productions,” Nick said. “I feel intimidated doing it for them.” Still, he’s not backing down. “That’s what being an artist is about – taking big swings. Even when it’s scary, it’s also kind of amazing.”
This run marks the first time The Last Five Years, Jason Robert Brown’s beloved two-character musical, is hitting Broadway officially. Nick plays Jamie Wellerstein, opposite Tony winner Adrienne Warren as Cathy. He’s loving the challenge – and especially enjoying watching Adrienne crush her solo “Summer in Ohio.” “She brings so much humor and soul. It’s unreal,” he said. His personal favorite to perform? “A Miracle Would Happen.” He says it’s funny, real, and one of those songs where you just get to let loose.
Nick’s whole family showed up to support him on opening night – Priyanka Chopra was on his arm, and his brothers Joe, Kevin, and Frankie were there too. Lately, Nick’s been walking to the theatre every day, and fans spot him all the time. “It’s actually a confidence boost,” he said. “Most people are super nice. And when they don’t call me Joe or Kevin, even better.”
Doing Broadway has given him a rare break from his usual non-stop travel. He’s been soaking up NYC life with Priyanka and their 3-year-old daughter, Malti. “She loves being in New York,” Nick said. “It’s been really special just staying in one place and spending quality time together.”
Nick’s run in The Last Five Years continues through June 22, and it’s clear he’s all in – nerves and all. It’s a different kind of stage for him, but one that’s giving him room to grow.
