OpenAI’s very own Twitter rumours are heating up, and it looks like the company is getting ready to shake up your timeline.
According to multiple sources, OpenAI is quietly working on its own X-style social platform. There’s already an internal prototype in testing that focuses on image generation with a social feed built in. Sam Altman, OpenAI’s CEO, has reportedly been getting outside feedback on the idea, though it’s still unclear whether this new platform will launch as a standalone app or be folded into the already insanely popular ChatGPT, which just became the most downloaded app globally.
If it does happen, OpenAI entering the social media ring would throw more fuel on the fire of Altman’s ongoing beef with Elon Musk. Earlier this year, Musk made a surprise $97.4 billion offer to buy OpenAI. Altman fired back with a sarcastic, “no thank you but we will buy Twitter for $9.74 billion if you want.” And now with talk of this new social network, it’s starting to feel like that clapback might have been a preview of what’s coming next.
But it’s not just Musk in OpenAI’s sights. Meta is also reportedly adding a social feed to its AI assistant app. When that news dropped, Altman casually posted, “ok fine maybe we’ll do a social app.” Looks like he wasn’t joking. If OpenAI launches its own social platform, it’ll unlock a treasure trove of real-time user data, something that Musk’s Grok and Meta’s Llama models already feed on to train their AI. Owning a social network would give OpenAI that same advantage – fresh, human content at scale to power smarter, faster AI.
One idea being explored with the prototype is AI-assisted posting – helping users create more engaging or viral content. One insider put it bluntly: “The Grok integration with X has made everyone jealous, especially how people go viral by getting it to say something stupid.” OpenAI clearly sees the value in tapping into that weird, wild, viral energy – and turning it into training data and engagement.
Of course, OpenAI has a lot going on, from GPT model upgrades to partnerships and enterprise tools. So it’s totally possible this project never makes it out into the world. But even if it stays in-house, the fact that it exists shows OpenAI is serious about expansion, and about taking on the biggest names in tech in more ways than one.
Would you ditch X or Threads for an OpenAI-powered feed?
