Sister Act 3 is finally happening, and Whoopi Goldberg just revealed that the film will include a tribute to the late Dame Maggie Smith.
Appearing on Italian talk show Che Tempo Che Fa, Whoopi confirmed that the script has been tweaked to reflect Maggie’s passing and honor her unforgettable role as Reverend Mother in the original movies. Maggie Smith passed away in September 2024 at age 89, and according to Whoopi, the new installment will make sure she’s remembered.
Whoopi Goldberg, now 69, will return as Sister Mary Clarence (a.k.a. lounge singer Deloris Van Cartier) in the Disney+ sequel. The movie will follow the events of Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit and the original 1992 hit that made $232 million at the box office.
During the interview, she also teased a possible Italy shoot, saying, “I hope so. It would be wonderful because we want to do it for a couple of reasons. Because we lost Maggie, you know, and we want to bring all the nuns here to kind of share that. It’s the perfect place.”
She added, “We are waiting for Disney to say yes or no. Keep your fingers crossed.”
So far, there’s no official word from Disney on filming locations or a release date, but the tribute is locked in, and Whoopi’s all in on making it meaningful.
Whoopi and Maggie were the heart of the original Sister Act cast, and fans have long associated the films with their chemistry, Whoopi’s over-the-top Deloris and Maggie’s stern-but-secretly-soft Reverend Mother.
Elsewhere in the interview, Whoopi looked back on her wild career, calling herself lucky, even if not all the roles were winners. Her least favorite? A weird 1996 sci-fi comedy called Theodore Rex, where she played a cop working with a talking dinosaur. “It was pretty bad,” she said. “It’s about me and a talking dinosaur, in the future.”
Still, Sister Act remains one of her most iconic roles. From witness protection to choir director, her character took audiences on a joyride through gospel medleys and life lessons, and fans have been begging for a third movie for years.
Now, Sister Act 3 is finally in motion, and it’s shaping up to be more than just a nostalgic reunion. It’s turning into a sendoff, a celebration, and a moment to honor one of British cinema’s finest.
Whether they shoot in Italy or not, this one’s going to hit different. Reverend Mother may be gone, but she’s far from forgotten.
